Severn Valley Railway

Bewdley Station, with its 3 platforms, was built in 1862 and was originally the junction for Wyre Forest and Stourport. Today, Kidderminster, with its national railway station is just a short ride away and the line takes visitors as far as Bridgnorth, with great views of the River Severn all the way!

There are lots of lovely places for a stroll along the riverside, through the Queen Elizabeth II Jubillee Gardens at the back of the museum, and along the high street, with its great selection of local shops. But if you fancy a bit more of an adventure, why not try the Bewdley River and Rail Circular Walk? It’s a waymarked route with some great views and there’s even a leaflet you can download to give you all the details you need.

Walking
Kidderminster isn’t really a tourist town, but it still has plenty of fascinating historic buildings and the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal passing through its centre. Both are a reminder of its heyday as the centre of the carpet industry in Britain.

Kidderminster Music Heritage Trail
Kidderminster has a strong cultural past as a major musical hub in the 60s and 70s with the Town Hall and Frank Freeman’s Dance Club playing host to major up-and-coming bands, boasting an impressive line up including Captain Beefheart, Manfred Mann and Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant.
Wolverley to Kidderminster Circular Walk
If you’re looking for a longer route to explore, why not try out the Wolverley to Kidderminster Circular. The walk is an 8.2 kilometers loop trail starting near to Kidderminster and will take about 2 hours to complete.
This attractive walk passes alongside the River Stour and the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal for most of its length and is good for all skill levels, although it could be a bit muddy in wet weather and might be overgrown in places in summer. You’ll find a great little café and pub at the start in Wolverley and The trail is perfect for hiking, walking, bird watching, and fishing. Its also great for dog walking!

Stourport has lots of lovely walks around this small town. One of the easiest places to start is Hartlebury Common.

Hartlebury Leapgate Circular Walk
The Hartlebury-Leapgate Circular Walk will take you along Leapgate old railway line. This route was created when the branch railway line that linked Stourport on Severn to Worcester was closed. The route links to Hartlebury Common, an important area of lowland heathland, with some great views over the town of Stourport on Severn, looking towards the river.
The walk will take about an hour and is a great way of exploring. It starts at Hartlebury Common Car Park and you can download a leaflet of the route her:

The Severn Way
If you’re interested in longer distance walking and hiking, the Severn Way is a fantastic route. A route follows the entire Severn Valley for its 220 miles, from its source to the sea. Starting at Plynlimon in Mid-Wales, the route takes in Hafren Forest, Llanidloes, Newtown, Welshpool, Shrewsbury and Ironbridge before heading south through Worcester, Tewkesbury and Gloucester to Severn Beach.
Links to other routes include the Gloucestershire Way, Wye Valley Walk, Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Walk, Worcester & Birmingham Canal Walk, Three Choirs Way and Telford and Wrekin Walks.

Of course, you could just try part of the route – Stourport to Bewdley is an easy start, or Stourport to Worcester if you fancy a bit more of a challenge!
